GUEST TEACHER, VEN. PANNAVATI BHIKKHUNI-- MARCH 29, 2009
Ven. Pannavati shared her eclectic view of the Buddha-Dharma with our sangha at our Sunday Sit, March 29, 2009. She is a student of Theravada, Mahayana, Ch'an and Vajrayana, but is happy to call herself "Buddha-yana," and believes in taking aspects of all the different teachings to fill in the gaps and bring wholeness to our practice and world view.
She personifies engaged Buddhism, taking it to the streets in her neighborhood, to the poorest communities in Cambodia, taking it to the nuns of Thailand who don't have the same human rights as a Thai woman who is a householder. She has opened the retreat zendo at her North Carolina Hermitage to the homeless, telling her sangha members they can now take their retreats at home. She and her sangha members will build housing and a latrine in a small Cambodian village next year, because no one else will. Last month, she ordained a handful of Thai nuns, then quickly left the country, because to do such a thing is not culturally acceptable-- for now.
Ven. Pannavati charmed us with her sharp sense of humor and uncommon, common sense. Getting lost in emptiness is not what it's all about for her. No matter how deep our wisdom, we still have to interface with the world, as the world is, with wisdom and compassion.
The recent downtown in the economy is freaking most of us out, but Ven. Pannavati is seizing the bounty of opportunity that comes with change. Now she can afford to buy more property for her hermitage. Now, she can share the dharma with her wealthy neighbors who are learning, the hard way, the truth about suffering and impermanence. She is awash with sunshine, laughs hearty at the challenges and ignorance around her and keeps on keeping on. We look forward to her next visit to Long Beach.

ALLIANCE FOR BHIKKHUNIS
The Alliance for Bhikkhunis (AFB) supports monastic Theravada women by assisting with housing costs, medical needs, transportation expenses, assistance in pursuing Buddhist studies, and any other activities which further their leadership roles and ability to be of service to their communities, both practically and spiritually. AFB supports women in the United States and abroad who are fully ordained or are seeking ordination. When we protect bhikkhunis, we protect ourselves and safeguard the Dhamma for future generations.
Our teacher, Victor Byrd, strongly supports the work of this organization and hopes sangha members will learn more about the plight of women Buddhist monastics around the world. Their website address is www.bhikkuni.net.
You may also write Alliance for Bhikkhunis president, Susan Pembroke at P.O. Box 1058, Santa Barbara, CA 93102-1058 or call (805) 659-4401.

We received this reply from Suan Pembroke after receiving our donation of $465, on behalf of Long Beach Meditation:
When I initially responded, I had not yet spoken to our Treasurer. I had no idea that your very generous sangha raised so much money and were sponsoring a bhikkhuni for the 2008 Rains Retreat. We have received other moneys as well so it looks like you're contributing for a second woman as well.
We are profoundly grateful to you and to all of the members of your sangha. In a recent Dhamma talk I gave, I said that when I was younger woman, I thought I could "meditate" my way to enlightenment. As my practice matures, I understand that unless I implement the entire path, being a superstar meditator isn't going to do me much good if I lack generosity, loving kindness, compassion, etc.
It's obvious to me that you grasp the role of dana in becoming enlightened. In countries, such as Burma, monks still go on alms rounds. We are not fortunate enough in the U.S. to fill a bhikkhu or bhikkhuni's bowl with whatever we are cooking. But, in donating to this Rains Retreat, you have found a way to span the ocean and put food in bhikkhunis' bowls for a full three months (in addition to paying for their transportation.)
Wishing you every blessing although that is superfluous since your actions can only bring you many blessings.
