Sunday Sit

Led by guiding teacher Victor Byrd

Everyone is welcome to our “home” sit where we gather as a sangha (a community of meditators). Sitting together we find support, guidance and the energy to do the challenging work of awakening.

Our core meditation practice is Vipassana, but we explore other Buddhist and non-dual traditions as well. Please join us!

Beginner’s Course

Led by guiding teacher Victor Byrd

In the Beginner’s Class we discuss the fundamentals of Vipassana meditation, our core practice, as well as other sitting traditions and techniques. Our Beginner's Course seeks to provide you with the fundamentals of meditation. In the first class we will begin with five basic concentration objects and ask you to choose one of the five. We will ask you to practice with that object for a few minutes each day before the second class and also to keep a journal of your progress.

With each successive class we will look at different styles of meditation, slowly integrating mindfulness practice into your concentration technique. By the end of the course our goal is for you to settle on the style that works best for you.

In addition to the technique of meditation - we will spend a few minutes each class helping you to understand how your meditation practice fits into the larger framework of the Dharma. In other words, you will learn the "why" of meditation as well as the "how." There will be ample time at the end of each class for questions and comments. Although we will not work out of a particular book - we will have handouts for reading at the end of each session.

Wednesday Sit

Dharma Study and Sit with Guiding Teacher, Victor Byrd

We meet at a private home in Long Beach every Wednesday evening, from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. After a brief orientation, and thirty minute sit, Victor guides a 50 minute period of study and discussion of the reading. Every two months, we read and discuss a seminal book on the Buddha-dharma.

Anyone interested in deepening their understanding of the Buddha-dharma is welcome to attend. .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) so we can add your name to the Dharma Study E-list. Periodic reminders will be emailed with suggested reading assignments. Chairs are available but we ask that you bring your own sitting gear, if possible.

Please .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) for the address and directions or if you have questions about the sit.

The Dharma is priceless, so we can’t put a monetary value on the teaching. Although there is no fee for this study group, dana is gratefully accepted in support of the teacher and LBM.

You are invited to discuss any questions regarding the Dharma directly with .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Thursday Sit

The Thursday night sit functions independently of Long Beach Meditation and neither Dan nor Silvana are formal students of our teacher. For this reason, we do not recommend the Thursday night sit for beginners. Both Dan and Silvana are experienced and competent meditators and the Thursday night sit provides an opportunity to deepen your practice in a warm and inviting group. It begins with a sit, followed by tea and an informal discussion and concludes with another sit. The Thursday night sit alternates between Dan and Silvana's house.

Please bring your own sitting cushion, chairs will be available.

Time: 7:30 to 9:00 PM

Location: Dan's address and phone number: 3520 1/2 Lemon Ave. Long Beach, 90807

3520 1/2 is the back house. The front house (3520/3522) is a 2-story Spanish duplex. Enter through gate to the right of building. Plenty of street parking.

Mindfulness Practice Group

Friendship on the path

One of the best ways to steady and mature our practice is in community with each other. Our Mindfulness Practice Group, or “Kalyana Mitta”, is designed to help support and strengthen our daily practice of meditation. Our hope is to bring together members of our meditation community to study and share practice experiences in a friendly, supportive environment.

We welcome new and seasoned students who are eager to bring their practice more fully into their daily lives. The group consists of 8 – 15 members. We meditate together, reflect on our dharma practice, hold group discussions on a topic or book. The groups is designed to support and encourage regular practice, conscious action and awakening in oneʼs life and in the world.

Whether you are new to meditation, or have an established practice, you are welcome to join our group.
