“We come together in this Holy Place,
To listen to the language of the Heart.
It cannot speak in words;
It cannot think in thoughts
The language of the Heart is silence.”
In the Beginner’s Class we discuss the fundamentals of Vipassana meditation, our core practice, as well as other sitting traditions and techniques. Our Beginner's Course seeks to provide you with the fundamentals of meditation. In the first class we will begin with five basic concentration objects and ask you to choose one of the five. We will ask you to practice with that object for a few minutes each day before the second class and also to keep a journal of your progress.
With each successive class we will look at different styles of meditation, slowly integrating mindfulness practice into your concentration technique. By the end of the course our goal is for you to settle on the style that works best for you.
In addition to the technique of meditation - we will spend a few minutes each class helping you to understand how your meditation practice fits into the larger framework of the Dharma. In other words, you will learn the "why" of meditation as well as the "how." There will be ample time at the end of each class for questions and comments. Although we will not work out of a particular book - we will have handouts for reading at the end of each session.
